How big are your resolutions this year?

2018 has officially left the building, and 2019 has arrived! It’s that time of the year to set those pesky New Year’s Resolutions that will fail by month’s end. Remember the term “Too big to fail” that was tossed around for the banks down in the States? That term didn’t work out so well, eh? The same can be said about New Year’s Resolutions. What happens when those resolutions fail? We tend to place blame on people, or even blame the current year by saying “Must be 20XX, this has been a year of bad luck” or some other term people use.

How big are your resolutions this year? Are they similar to last year’s resolutions? How many years have you had the same resolution? Ask yourself those three questions, now look at your resolutions. In a previous New Years Resolution column I wrote a couple years ago, I talked about making your resolutions with an easy to achieve result in a short amount of time. That way you are able to feel accomplished that you have achieved your goal, and are enticed to continue towards setting another deadline with the same resolution.

For example, is weight loss on your resolution list? Instead of giving yourself a big number at the end of the year, do a simple resolution for the month of January. For example, lose five pounds by the end of January. Five pounds doesn’t sound like a lot of weight, but take a couple minutes and look up five pounds of fat in Google and look at the search results. You don’t have to say “Lose 5 pounds;” it could be any number, but make it realistic, and something that you can commit to. Achieving this new smaller goal, you will feel great about yourself, but why stop there, set another goal/resolution for February. But remember, never be impatient for the results of your resolutions since that mind set can result in your resolutions’ downfall.

Did a resolution fail last year? If you said yes, then re-read the second paragraph. We are always quick to blame if something doesn’t work out, especially blaming the year. When it comes to our resolutions, we expect the change/results to happen right away. We are becoming more and more impatient as we get older.

But we have to realize, it’s not the year’s fault for the failure, for the downfall of our resolutions. The year is just a number that represents how many times we circled the sun. We built resolutions so high, that we expect big things to come from them in a short amount of time. That’s why I recommended starting off small, with a realistic deadline.

But if your resolutions fail, don’t worry, don’t fret, we learn best from our failures than we do from our successes. And remember, it’s not 2019’s fault. You expect the worse, and the worst will happen.
