Tree stump all that stood between car and cliff

A tree stump was all that prevented a car from going over a cliff in Mount Douglas Park on Wednesday night.

The driver and two passengers of a 1999 Honda Civic walked away from a single-vehicle crash at 9:30 p.m.

Police said the Honda was travelling too fast for conditions on Churchill Drive and skidded off the road and down an embankment.

Churchill Drive is a paved road leading to the 213-metre summit of Mount Douglas Park. It is closed to traffic in the morning, when it is used as a multi-use trail.

“The Honda came to rest against a tree, where the three occupants walked up to the road,” said Saanich police Sgt. Mike Lawless. “Beyond the tree was a steep dropoff.”

Although police said the crash, which happened at 9:30 p.m., was the result of driver error, no charges were laid.
