REC Centre pool preparing to open

Staff is in place and the REC Centre pool is set for a delayed opening next month, with the season likely to be extended for two weeks in August.

“Today we can finally report that we have four lifeguards… So we finally were able to get our staffing in place so the tentative opening date for the pool will be May 13,” recreation director Bain Gair told council at Mondays regular meeting.

The announcement followed a question from Vera Busse about a donation from the SWIMS society, which advocates and fundraises for the REC Centre pool.

“The SWIMS club gave a cheque to the District of Lillooet for a considerable amount of money and at the time I didn’t really understand why they were giving it to the council, and I just wonder, where is that money now?” Busse asked

Mayor Peter Busse replied that he and Coun. Jennifer Leach had discussed the donation with SWIMS and that it was intended to fund an extension of the pool opening for either end of the season. He asked Leach to elaborate.

“Basically from the standpoint of the district the money is still sitting in an account waiting for that,” Leach explained.

“The money that they got was partially funded by 100 people who care and it was specifically for extending the pool, the time that it was open, and that of course hinges on whether staff is wiling to stay on for a month. That would be something that our director of recreation needs to work out with SWIMS as well.”

Gair stepped in to clarify further.

“The money SWIMS gave to the District of Lillooet was $8,000 and that was to open the pool for an additional two weeks for this year, our original intention was to open the middle of March and here it is the middle of April,” he said.

“I spoke to Sandy Gauer about what they wanted to do with that extra $8,000, the money that they had contributed … I asked her if she want to use that $8,000 to stretch the season through the summer because the summer program is a lot less well attended than the programming would be in the spring. Sandy indicated that… they want that money to be used this year to keep the pool open for the extra two weeks.”
