The Lillooet Public Library is starting 2019 with some big changes!
The Book Sale, Open House and AGM are coming on Feb. 12.
The Library is also starting off 2019 with some major innovations and renovations!
We have a new space at the REC Centre. Room 203, which used to be the Daycare, is now part of the Lillooet Public Library. The room is being renovated with a dividing wall. One room will be the office for our Adult Literacy Program. The other part will be used for educational programs, story times, quiet study space for patrons and other ideas we haven’t dreamed of yet.
Having a bigger space is going to allow us to offer new programs and new kinds of collections. Over the next few months we will be building a small “digital lab.” Patrons will be able to sign up to use equipment in the library. You will be able to come and use our professional DVD cleaner and there will be a machine to convert your old VHS to digital formats.
More and more public libraries are offering their patrons “libraries of things.” Everything from musical instruments to telescopes to pressure canners can be borrowed and brought home to use.
The Lillooet Library’s first “thing” is available now. We have a Radon Testing Kit. The kit includes a small device that will measure the amount of radon gas in your home, instructions for running the test, and further resources for what to do if your home has a problem. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas. High levels in your home can cause lung cancer.
The test takes an entire month, so we anticipate a long waiting list. You can get in line by putting a hold on the Radon Kit in our catalogue. If you don’t know how to place a hold, give the library a call at 250-256-7944 and we will help you.
We want to offer our community other “things” to borrow. We will be reaching out to talk with you and find out what people need and want to see in our Library of Things.
Feb. 12, 2019 marks our 29th year of service. We will be celebrating this milestone with a full day of activities.
The day will start at 11 a.m. with our bi-annual used book sale, which will run all week. Later in the afternoon we will be having an Open House showcasing our programs. Come find out about our children and youth programs, meet our volunteer co-ordinator and find out about what is offered by our Adult Literacy Program. Staff will be on hand to answer questions, show you how to use our digital resources and give you a tour of our new room.
At 5:30 pm we will hold our Annual General Meeting, electing a new Board of Trustees. After the AGM we will host a dinner for board, staff and volunteers. There will be a draw for free tickets for a few lucky community members to attend the dinner.
Come down to the library and put your name in the hat for a chance to have a delicious meal with your favourite community librarians!
