Refraining from what is harmful


Limits or temperance means refraining from that which is harmful and moderately using that which is beneficial. Even benefits can be brought to excess.

The frontal lobe is the section of the brain that is responsible for moral reasoning, judgment, social behavior, and spirituality. It is the key to our rational, moral, and ethical decision making. It is the part of the brain that defines our character, personality and will. Therefore destroying the frontal lobe impacts your thoughts, actions, destroys you as a person and destroys your character.

What happens when the frontal lobe malfunctions?

Experts have linked frontal lobe damage with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression and numerous other mental illnesses. Some of the effects of frontal lobe damage can include:

- impairment of moral principle

- social impairment

- lack of foresight

- loss of abstract reasoning

- lack of restraint (boasting, hostility, aggressiveness)

- diminished ability for math

- memory impairment (especially of recent events)

- distractibility and restlessness

- emotional instability

- apathy (lack of initiative)

- indifference to one's condition

What are common causes of frontal lobe damage?

Amazingly, the most common form of frontal lobe damage comes from unhealthy lifestyle choices. The frontal lobe is very sensitive to the effects of toxic chemicals. For instance, alcohol, drugs, caffeine and tobacco have all been found to damage the frontal lobe. These and other toxic additives to our lives, such as some movies, music and television shows change our minds as we are exposed to them. These changes produce different people in us, leaving us with the challenges mentioned before.

A drug is defined as a substance that has a physiological effect when ingested or otherwise introduced into the body, in particular a pharmaceutical preparation. Often these effects, while physiological, affect the brain, causing stimulating or numbing effects.

I organize drugs in three categories, oral, metal and topical.

Oral drugs to avoid include: cigarettes, caffeine (coffee, tea, chocolate), alcohol (vinegar), white sugar, pharmaceuticals, stimulating spices (hot peppers, cinnamon, cloves, black and white pepper), baking powder, baking soda, narcotics and opiates, artificial flavors and colors.

Topical Drugs include: Propylene Glycol, Sodium Laurel(th) Sulfate, Mineral Oil, Dyes, Methyl Paraben, phthalates and petroleum-based products.

Mental Drugs include: Entertainment Television (especially those that depict actions you would not like done to you and dialogue you would not like said to you.) By watching situations that you disagree with, you cause psychological changes in the brain that often cause undesirable changes in thoughts (nightmares, indifference etc) and actions. That also applies to reading and listening to music.

The best we can do, is take steps to avoid all that is harmful. This can be challenging but it is possible. The more times you do what is right the stronger your frontal lobe gets. The more positive things you experience the more positive changes in your character. Spend time reducing the negative effects of stress and encouraging positive thoughts and words. Protect your senses - the avenues to the soul.

Limits are vital to keep your body, mind and soul well.
