On and off throughout the summer, heavy equipment and drilling machines have been working along the CN Rail tracks near the site of the former Esso bulk plant.
What have they been doing at that location?
Imperial Oil spokesperson Pius Rolheiser said the ongoing work at the former bulk plant is related to soil and groundwater sampling.
“The work is being done to confirm that conditions at the site meet applicable provincial criteria prior to Imperial terminating its lease agreement and returning the site to owner CN Rail,” Rolheiser told the News.
The former bulk plant was operated by Imperial Oil for decades and ceased operation in 2004.
Since then, Imperial has been monitoring and testing conditions on the site.
“Pending confirmation by the current assessment work, which is expected to be complete by fall 2012, Imperial intends to return the property to CN Rail,” said Rolheiser.
