The Lillooet Skateboarding and BMX Society is back in town

A meeting took place July 11 to re-establish the Lillooet Skateboarding and BMX Society which, although active during the 1990s, has been defunct for years. It was decided that the short-term goals should focus on maintaining and improving the existing skatepark.

Earlier in the month, a small group spent the day cleaning and fixing up the local skatepark. We took away a truckload of garbage, did some minor repairs and cleaned up the parking area. Thanks to all who helped and to Bob Sheridan from Buy Low for donating to our barbecue that day.

The long-term goal is to raise and acquire funding to build a concrete park for our youth to enjoy. The key to making this happen is to have those who love to ride at the park step in, help out and become involved.

To meet our goals, we need to raise funds so we have organized a bottle drive on July 28. Look for details around town soon.

Our first event, Learn to Skate in Kamloops on Aug. 1, is an instructional skateboarding tour traveling across Canada this summer. Five members are already signed up for this event. If you’re interested in attending, registration is free online. Contact the email address below for more details.

Joining to become a member of the Society is the first step to getting involved. Like the original society, membership will come with benefits, including a say in the future of skateboarding and BMX riding in Lillooet. The next meeting is on Aug. 8. New members are welcome.

If you are interested in becoming a member, have ideas to share, or want to help out in any way or need information on upcoming meetings and events, we’d love to hear from you. Please contact lillooetboardnbike@gmail.com.
