Dear Editor,
I would like to express my distaste for the letter criticizing the public works director in the Jan. 20 issue of the Lillooet News.
Having had a meeting with this gentleman and some correspondence, I know that this is a man whom we are truly lucky to have as an employee at the District of Lillooet, and he is worth every penny he is paid and more!
It pains me that criticism of him directly was published. I hope that the editor of the Lillooet News might consider discarding direct criticism of district employees and their salaries in the future.
After all, it is for the mayor and council to approve or disapprove a staff member’s performance and pay grade, and certainly not through public slander.
Additionally, I hope that the individual who wrote the comments might consider the fact that employees of the district, while meant to serve the public, are not answerable to the public and are actually answerable to the chief administrative officer, mayor, and council, by whom they are employed.
If you have criticism, your comments or concerns should be forwarded accordingly and directly to the district.
Finally, I hope that the mayor, councillors, and CAO have disregarded these comments and I would encourage them to stand forth and show their support for the public works director.
I know that in my one meeting with him, I was extremely impressed with his dedication, attention to detail, and the sheer scale of the work he has ahead of him.
I believe that the end product of his hard (yet seemingly unappreciated) work will be a wonder for this town in future years. Don’t lose him!
