Lillooet Seidokan Aikido is a new martial art club that began offering weekly classes in the community since last October. Aikido is a non-violent art of self-defence founded in Japan, and blends circular techniques and redirection. The club is organizing the Seidokan Retreat, a special weekend training opportunity from July 23rd to the 26th to be conducted by Joseph Crotty Sensei, the chief instructor at Aikido Institute of America (Seidokan World Headquarters) from Los Angeles. Last month, the club held a successful sushi dinner and demonstration event attended by nearly 50 people. Instructor for the club, Mariko Kage would like to thank everyone who came out for the fundraiser that earned $550 towards funds needed to cover expenses for making this Retreat a reality.
On Friday July 24th during this training taking place at the Ucwalmicw Centre in T'it'q'et, those interested are invited to attend a "Ki" Development class taught by Crotty Sensei from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. Admission for this one hour class is by donation. This will be an excellent introduction for people of all ages and background as this class will not require anyone to take rolls or falls doing ‘techniques’. The class will rather explore the principles of Aikido and ways to strengthen ones' vital life force called "Ki". Then on Saturday, two Lillooet Seidokan Aikido students, Daniel Kerslake and Susannah Tedesco will be testing to earn their respective new ranks. Finally, on Sunday July 26th at noon, the public is again invited to attend a short demonstration of expert techniques by Crotty Sensei who holds a 7th degree blackbelt. For further information regarding the Retreat or classes with Lillooet Seidokan Aikido, please contact (250) 256-0686.
Kage grew up in Japan and lived in Los Angeles where she attained her blackbelt from A.I.A., receiving instructions from Joseph Crotty Sensei and others. This will be Crotty Sensei's first visit ever in Canada. Seidokan has over 20 branch dojos in the United States, Japan, and Isreal. Lillooet Seidokan Aikido is preparing to officially register and become the first Seidokan dojo (branch) in Canada.
Lillooet Seidokan Aikido sincerely thanks the Ucwalmicw Centre and the Lillooet Friendship Centre for providing practice space. Kage is especially grateful for the support of friends and family, as well as the encouragement from Mrs. Minoru Kobayashi, the director of A.I.A. and the wife of late Roderick T. Kobayashi Sensei who founded A.I.A. in 1970. She fondly remembers the training years with Kobayashi Sensei in the early 1990's before he past away. Three T’it’q’et community members, Shawn Scotchman, Harold Pelegrin, and Norm Leech were awarded bursaries for this weekend training.
