Evacuation orders for Tyaughton Lake, Gun Creek Road, and Mud Creek were lifted last Sunday. The Tyaughton Lake fire is still about 8,000 hectares in area. The fire is currently 70 per cent contained.
Staff Sgt. Doug Pack, chief of the RCMP contingent attached to the fire, confirmed that a handful of residents had returned to the previously evacuated areas under police escort.
Meanwhile, Carol Lake, Marshall Lake, and Liza Lake are still under the evacuation order. Jerry Wearing, the provincial Forests Ministry fire information officer for the Tyaughton Lake Fire, explained that building fireguards in those areas has been difficult because of the terrain.
Gun Lake, Gold Bridge, Bralorne, Tyaughton Lake, Gun Creek Road, and Mud Creek remain on evacuation alert.
Last Monday, crews were working on burning unused fuel (that is, trees and other materials that may catch fire) in the 8,000-hectare containment area.
Road 40 is now open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wearing said that fire crews and heavy equipment usually use the road before and after those hours.
At this point, there are about 255 B.C. Forest Service firefighters working on the fire, in addition to between 50 and 60 contract firefighters. The RCMP contingent, which is providing security for evacuated areas and structures, is a dozen strong.
Eight helicopters were on the scene as of last Sunday.
Local units include two 20-person Forest Service crews, the Knights of Seton Lake and the Rattlers of Lytton.
About 40 firefighters contracted from Firestorm are from Seton Lake as well. About 20 locals are working in the fire base camp, located 25 kilometres from Lillooet near the fork of Road 40 and the Yalakom Forest Service Road.
