After three years, the Lillooet Killer Whales swim team is back.
Rick and Sandy Gauer, newcomers to Lillooet who moved here last November, have taken over the club and are seeking new members.
“Rick’s been swimming his whole life,” says his wife, Sandy, adding that he started swim clubs in Burnaby and Pender Island, where they last lived.
“This is my 20th year as a coach, 28th as a swimmer,” says Rick.
The Killer Whales, part of the B.C. Summer Swimming Association, last swam in the 2006 season.
The team had been inactive until this month, but remained part of the association on paper.
“It wasn’t officially dropped or closed,” says Sandy. However, “It was in danger of being struck.”
The Gauers approached the swimming association and expressed their desire to restart the team. According to Rick, the response was positive.
“They want the club to succeed again. They were kind of wondering why it had stopped operating.”
After that, it was just a matter of paying the membership fee.
“They cashed our cheque, so I guess that means we’re approved,” quips Rick.
